Ubud vs. Uluwatu: Which Should You Visit First?

Ubud and Uluwatu are often mentioned in the same breath as "must-see Bali," but they're genuinely different trips -- one inland and cultural, one coastal and cliff-lined. Here's how travel guides frame the choice.

Two very different sides of Bali

Ubud is Bali's cultural and artistic centre, set inland in lush volcanic valleys, known for rice terraces, temples and jungle scenery. Uluwatu, on the other hand, is defined by its coastline -- clifftop temples, surf breaks and beaches like Padang Padang and Nyang Nyang.

If you can only pick one

Several travel guides frame it simply: pick Ubud if you're after culture, temples and jungle scenery; pick Uluwatu if beaches, surfing and sunset views matter more to you. For a first-ever Bali trip, more than one guide leans toward Ubud specifically for its range of iconic, classically "Bali" experiences.

Doing both: the real travel time

A lot of travellers end up doing both rather than choosing. The drive between Uluwatu and Ubud is around 2-2.5 hours each way, so if you're combining them as a round trip in a single day, plan for a full day of driving, not a quick add-on.
